What Explains Failure [or should we try]

Nerves atingle, lovers starcrossed,

attempt to strangle time

And make eternity

Of an hour.

" A bed of grass, a jug of wine, and ticks,"

Laughed he......

Nervously.

A kiss in response, and the blanket laid

legs and arms and chests met,

And seemingly try to push through skin,

to see what lies beyond.

The woman smiled, enhancing the crescent of sun

Cascading through her hair

A waterfall of rainbows

To fall upon his adoring brow.

Mountains of despair,

Oceans of pain,

Seas of depression,

Continents of sadness,

These are the territories

to which I am betrothed.

You can`t fool me with heaven

                         Said he,....and fear....and inadequacy.

And so he sits and writes this poem

Gazing at her painting on the wall

Hoping she`ll read and understand

and bequeath him another glance at heaven.

And yet, suppose he fails

As poets often do,

Living in some other`s world is all they know, and fantasy.

Shakespeare Sonnet xxxiii

XXXIII.

Full many a glorious morning have I seen
Flatter the mountain-tops with sovereign eye,
Kissing with golden face the meadows green,
Gilding pale streams with heavenly alchymy;
Anon permit the basest clouds to ride
With ugly rack on his celestial face,
And from the forlorn world his visage hide,
Stealing unseen to west with this disgrace:
Even so my sun one early morn did shine,
With all-triumphant splendour on my brow;
But, out! alack! he was but one hour mine,
The region cloud hath mask'd him from me
now.
Yet him for this my love no whit disdaineth;
Suns of the world may stain when heaven's
sun staineth.

Shakespeare wrote this shortly after his only son died.

James Among the Animals Part 3

Blinding light! All White! "Where am I ?",James said to himself. As his eyes adjusted to the light, he saw a man standing at the foot of his bed. "Hi James" said the man. He recognized the man, Sheriff Bill Taylor. "Hello,Sheriff,Where am I?,How did I get here?" "Now calm down James, everything is going to be OK",said Sheriff Taylor.  "Your wife called us,said a wild animal was coming to get in the house, and you were in the barn. When we got there, we found you lying on the back porch, your throat cut open. Luckily, the EMT`s were there, saved your life."

James looked at the man, everything slowly coming back to him."Did you find the animal? Did it get away?",he pleaded.

The Sheriff looked down at James, shaking his head."Well, you see James, that`s what I was hoping to talk to you about. We didn`t see no animal. But,lying next to you on the porch, was a man, impaled on a pitchfork, dead! What do you know about that?"

Rufus Wainwright "VIBRATE"

My Phone`s on vibrate for you

electroclash is karaoke too

I tried to dance Britney Spears

I guess I`m getting on in years.

My phone`s on vibrate for you

God knows what all these new drugs do

I guess to have no more fears

But still I always end up in tears

My phone`s on vibrate for you

But still I never ever feel from you

Pinnochio`s now a boy who wants to turn

Back into a toy

So call me, call me in the morning

Call me in the night, so call me

Call me any time you like

My phone`s on vibrate for you, for you

Part2..Fear#4 Canoeing the Rapids [Please Read #1 First]

As we neared the rapids, which was smaller than the first one,but still formidable for lake canoers,I became very afraid...Here I was in a canoe,an inexperienced paddler, with the lives of my wife and son foolishly in peril! We were at the entrance to the rocks and the water was tumbling,roiling...Barb was scared,Sean was mute..What the hell could I do?I sure couldn`t steer through this! Finally,an idea struck me. I carefully put one foot out of the canoe to impede our forward progress, and pointed the canoe at the middle of the water [no longer a river].I stepped out of the canoe and let go!...Two things happened then that hadn`t occurred to me.[All of this happened in seconds!] First,as soon as I left go of the canoe, the rapids pulled me under and into the churning water:Second,I had never put my life jacket back on! I was pulled through the rocks, underwater, unable to breathe,my body striking the rocks. As I tumbled, not breathing,my thoughts turned to "relax let the water take you up".As I still wasn`t breathing,I thought better of this[Thank God !!] and started clawing and scratching at the passing rocks...I found a purchase and ,after catching my breath, pulled myself up on a large rock.Good and bad!!My wife and son were safely in the canoe, which had not capsized......I couldn`t move my left leg [there was no feeling below my hip].I laid back, thankful my family and I were alive, and feeling started coming back to my leg! Just a pinched nerve! Bud used a rope to pull me to the other bank and I told him we were finished with canoeing,if he was unable to tow my canoe the rest of the way,I`d just let the fucking thing go by itself. He towed the canoe and Barb,Sean and myself walked about three miles to a place where some trucks were parked. Both of them were great! No anger,no recriminations. When we arrived, the other couple we were with had their car at the base, but said they couldn`t get up the hill with all of us. I [in very strong terms] told the guy that he would try to take my son and wife up with them!Which he did, successfully. I stayed at the base that night unable to climb out. The next day I found out that the other couple grilled steaks that night, offering my wife and son nothing![something I later expressed my feelings to him about! Bud and his wife were at the base and the next morning we were able to drive out, with a lot of help. Boy,we really enjoyed that trip to the Grand Canyon of Pa. !!!!!!!!

Fear #4 Grand Canyon of Pa. Canoeing the Rapids

When my son was about 7 or 8, two fellow workers told me they were going canoeing in the Grand Canyon of Pa in Tioga Cty.,Pa. They asked if my family would like to go along... a nice weekend camping trip. We had only canoed on ponds and lakes and I told them I would be a little worried about canoeing in any kind of rapids. One of them,Bud,with whom we had camped before, stated that the water was low at this time of the year and there would be little in the way of rapids. My wife and I decided to go, and we rented canoes on the way to the Grand Canyon. We set up camp in the State Park overlooking the canyon, and the next morning, drove to Wellsboro, where we could enter the river. The first hour was uneventful and I removed my lifejacket because of the heat. We arrived at a rapids bounded by rocks, which Bud said was the only rapids on the river at this time of year. Bud helped me carry my family`s canoe past this impediment and I asked him if I could go through the rapids with him[as front paddler]. It was exhilerating!!

Barb,Sea and I got back in our canoe and we paddled for another 15 minutes. Ahead of us, Bud hollered something back, which I could not make out. However, in a minute, I understood! We were approaching another rapids.......

Shakespeare Sonnet XXVII

Quote from Rollo May,"Intentionality, the Heart of Human Will"

In one of his sonnets,Shakespeare writes of his going to bed at night weary with the day`s travel. Then he continues,

But then begins the journey in my head

To work my mind,when body`s work`s expir`d;

For then my thoughts-from far where I abide-

Intend a zealous pilgrimage to thee,

And keep my drooping eyelids open wide..

James Among The Animals Pt.2 Please see Pt. 1 first!

With his blood freely flowing,James knew he must get to the house for help.He would soon be unconscious if the blood flow could not be slowed and he could not reason how to accomplish this. Carrie will know what to do,he told himself, and began to crawl to the door on the back porch of the house.James was unable to stand and as he snaked his way to the back porch,he could see a marred line of blood following him from the barn.

James finally arrived at the back porch and with a final effort banged on the door as hard as he could, then collapsed.

Carrie, his wife, was cleaning up after supper and was just on the other side of the door. She heard a scraping, then a bang, and rushed to the back window. As she peered into the dark, the full moon illuminated the back yard and she frighted upon seeing a large grey animal stalking to her back porch. It was keening and walking unsteadily but was steadily, assuredly coming! Carrie screamed, locked the back door, and ran into the living room to be with her children. Grabbing the phone, she called 911." Help!! There`s a wild animal trying to get in the house and my husbands in the barn! Please Help!!" The police said they would be there in 10 minutes, hang on,and she gathered her children to her breast.

James never woke up in time to see the animal reach his destination...reach his final meal.

James Among The Animals Part 1

James was in the barn, final chores of the evening. It was past dusk and he was laying a last bale of hay in the cow`s stalls when he heard the sound. A low growling sound, faint but unmistakeable. "Roffie ?" he whispered, but he was quite sure that the dog was in the house with his wife and two daughters. Roffie stayed with his kids each night until bedtime, when James put him in the barn to stay with the cows,to sound an alarm in case of any threat to the animals. Jasper from two farms up had reported seeing something like a large dog, bigger than a coyote, at the tree line behind his property, and all of the locals were taking extra precautions.

He heard the sound again, coming from behind him.As james turned to the growl, he felt something, like a heavy weight, strike him in the back.James was thrown forward, landing hard on his left side. As he attempted to scramble to his feet, the growl repeated itself, and he felt a tearing at his throat, behind his left ear. James fell again and the weight was on him, tearing, thrashing, pulling at the neck of his sweatshirt. he felt the warm sticky liquid staining his shirt and felt the strength leeching from his body.

With a last effort,James found the pitchfork he was using to strew the hay and as the animal bounded toward him,he held the pitch fork tines up and the monster impaled itself and lay still.

Another Look At Fear

                              F E A R

Morning smiles like the face of a newborn child innocent unknowing.

Winter`s end promises of a long lost friend. Speaks to me of comfort

but I fear I have nothing to give. I have so much to lose here in this lonely place. Tangled up in your embrace there`s nothing I`d like better than to fall.

but I fear I have nothing to give.

Wind in time rapes the flower trembling on the vine and nothing yields to shelter from above. they say temptation will destroy our love. The never ending hunger

but I fear I have nothing to give I have so much to lose here in this lonely place tangled up in our embrace there`s nothing I`d like better than to fall

but I fear I have nothing to give. I have so much to lose. I have nothing to give. We have so much to lose...

The most cited Dune quote,

"I must not fear. Fear is the mindkiller. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past,I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

Rufus Wainwright

Rufus Wainwright is the son of Loudon Wainwright and Kate McGarrigle, two folk artists of the `60`s and `70`s.

                                  Pretty Things

Pretty things, so what if I like pretty things

Pretty lies, so what if I like pretty lies

From where you are

To where I am now

I need these pretty things

Around the planets of my face

Everything`s a sign of my astrology

From where you are

To where I am now

Is its own galaxy

Be a star and fall down somewhere next to me

And make it past your color TV

This time will pass and with it will me

And all these pretty things

And don`t say you don`t notice them

BERTRAND RUSSELL "What I Have Lived For"

BUST OF RUSSELL    BY    JONAH JONES

From Prelude, "The autobiography of Bertrand Russell" "what I Have Lived For"

"Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither,in a wayward course, over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.

Acapulco Eagles

In the late 80`s,a friend of mine and I went to Acapulco to spend Christmas and New Year`s. We had been there before, and got a nice big room directly overlooking the Bay. I was looking forward to our time together but I was also looking forward to watching the Phila. Eagles--Chicago Bears Playoff game! Every bar or restaurant we stopped at, I asked if they were showing the game [actually my friend did, `cause she spoke fluent Spanish]. I finally found out that the game was being broadcast in spanish at our hotel, the Acapulco Plaza. Saturday arrived, and i had some scotch and snacks ready for the game! My friend Astrid asked if I minded if she went to the pool while the game was on,since she didn`t care too much for football. Although the only Spanish I could speak was " Por Favor ,dos Chivas con iello, double" I felt that i didn`t need the announcers translated and I thanked her for the thought and she left. I sat back, poured myself a Chivas, and turned on the game! Unfortunately, the game was the one now known as the "Fog Bowl". Fog rolled in off of the lake, and All that you could see on the TV screen was fog! The play by play was in Spanish and I could neither see nor hear what was going on for practically the whole game [except when scores were posted]. Didn`t finish the game....finished the Chivas!         Of course the Eagles LOST !!!!

The Floating Book,a novel of venice

Michelle Lovric`s 1st American published book. Quoted in Phila Inquirer`s review by Frank Wilson...Listen to this quote...

"Outside lightning scratched feebly at the sky, trying to release the moisture. Darkness inserted itself surreptitiously, as if ashamed over itself. It ambushed the sky by degrees, only clapping its black hand over the light at the last moment, when the PALAZZI, like bone-white sponges dipped in ink, crumbled their colors away."

W O W !!
